Born to working class parents in Dunedin in 1959. I am the eldest son of three brothers. Educated in Dunedin, leaving school at 15 to work in factories around the city. I am married to Julie and live in Levin.Who is John Laing?
Failure to make right choices and listen to my parents saw me associating with criminal types, which ultimately cost me my freedom for nine months when I was sentenced to prison for 11 counts of breaking and entering.
While in prison I attended church service more out of a desire to break the monotony of my prison surroundings not really having any interest in spiritual things.
After my release I continued to seek friendship, comfort and security in the wrong circles and this nearly brought me back into prison again.
At the age of 25 I had become desperate, empty, and alone and was contemplating suicide when I had a personal encounter with the living God in my home at Dunedin.
This was the turning point for me. I have been a Christian now for 22 years and for the last eight of those years have worked with OAC Ministries as an evangelist.
What does John Laing do?
I do Prison visitation, chapel services. Children's evangelistic programmes (Church and local community) Children's camp speaker, Retirement homes visitations programmes, Evangelism training.
