Isabelle Omundson
in The Team
I had the fantastic opportunity to grow up with two parents who loved both me and each other. They also believed in God and took me to church every Sunday I can remember. So from a very young age I knew all about Jonah, Moses, Esther and Jesus.
Who is Isabelle Omundson?
It wasn't until I was eight years old that I realised that knowing about Jesus, and that He died on the cross wasn't enough. I went to a kid's camp where the speaker explained Jesus died because I had broken God's rules. That He had paid the penalty for me, so that I could have a relationship with God.
That night I remember that I wanted very much to be forgiven for the things I had done wrong, so I prayed with a leader from the camp, asking God to forgive me for my sin, thanking Him for dying for me, and letting him be the boss of my life. And God has taken me on a rollercoaster ride every since!
Life certainly hasn't been dull. Although I picked up a nasty virus when I was a teenager, leaving me with a chronic illness for about fourteen years, I still knew that the Lord was faithful. I relied on Him a lot to help me through exams and social occasions, because I never knew when I would be well enough to do anything!
I was also blessed with a birthmark on my face, and an introverted nature, so I was teased a fair amount at school. The girls at school would be mean, but it didn't shake me that much, because I had friends at my youth group who liked me for who I was, and knew I had a friend who loved me, believed in me, and stayed closer than any other; Jesus.
Even after leaving school I had no real idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had loved working at a kid's camp during the school holidays, and didn't want a job that would mean I couldn't keep going to camp.
I studied at Nelson Polytech for two years, getting an Advance Certificate in Business Computing before the Lord started to speak to me about doing something for Him". The next year I went on a course on evangelism run by OAC Ministries, and while I was attending, God spoke to me about working with OAC in Christchurch.
What does Isabelle Omundson do?
It was a big step, but in July 1994 I moved from Nelson to Christchurch, and I have been working with OAC ever since. I started off in an administrational role, but I had a bunch of other skills and passions, so I slowly moved away from admin and into ministry.
I studied part time with Bible College of New Zealand, finishing a Ministry Internship Diploma in 1999, and am now slowly working through a degree in Ministry. I also discovered a hidden passion for the performing art of mime, and for three years OAC seconded me to Mimeistry International to train their School of Ministering Arts to attain a Journeymanship (Equivalent to a degree) in mime.
I then took a year off of my ministry with OAC to tour the United States with a professional mime troupe before returning with a renewed passion for Evangelism and the performing arts in 2004.
I am now working primarily in the Christchurch area, though I travel around the South Island, and have been known to jaunt overseas at times to preach the gospel, teach others how to share the gospel without looking like a fool, train people in mime, speak at kids camps, and generally share the Gospel as much as I can.
Since 1994 I haven't received a guaranteed income, but God has taken care of every need and blessed me abundantly. He has healed my chronic illness, I've travelled around the world, visited seven nations, and trained in the United States for three years, all of which the Lord has provided for. He is amazing, and as I said at the start, I don't believe in miracles, I rely on them!!
